Spectacle and Display: A Modern History of Britain's Roman Mosaic Pavements is the first narrative to explore responses and attitudes to mosaics, not just at the point of discovery but during their subsequent history. Yet one estimate suggested that 75% of all known mosaics from Britain have been lost, and they are commonly displayed out of context, wall mounted as artwork in museums and exhibitions and far from their role as floors. Heritage under Pressure examines the relationship between the political perspective of the UK government on 'soft power' and the globalising effect of projects carried out by archaeologists and heritage professionals working in the historic environment. In the late 1980s and early 1990s five excavations took place around Bedford in preparation for a water pipeline. In addition to revealing the development of the rural landscape throughout prehistory and the historic period, the project also uncovered evidence of Roman domestic and industrial activity, as well as cemeteries. The Roman cemetery at Kempston is of particular interest because of the large number of decapitations. Continuous occupation throughout the Roman and Saxon periods was also detected. The report includes large amounts of data, with detailed descriptions of the sites and their features, the environmental and skeletal remains, and the rich variety of finds.

But Canada also has a long, rich, and important historical tradition of resistance to both war and militarization. Until the late 1950s residents of Vancouver and Victoria negotiated a shopping landscape that would be unrecognizable to today's consumers: most stores were closed for at least half the day on Wednesdays, prevented from opening during the evenings, and were banned from operating on Sundays. Since that decade, however, British Columbians, and Canadians generally, have made significant strides in gaining greater and easier access to consumer goods. Selling Out or Buying In? is the first work to illuminate the process by which consumers' access to goods and services was liberalized and deregulated in Canada in the second half of the twentieth century.
